Understanding Graze Against The Machine Regenerative Farming

A sunflower with overlayed text - Honarable Harvest grounds our approach to regenerative farming
We all like knowing where our food comes from and how it’s grown and raised. I hear a lot of people say “the best way to do that is to get to know your farmer.” Our practices of Graze Against The Machine Regenerative Farming is inspired by indigenous principles. Our approach is constantly evolving as we slowly learn from indigenous communities and unlearn the deep-seeded propaganda of industrial agriculture that even pervades some organic practitioners.

We find that not everyone has the time let alone knows what questions to ask to get to know a farm. Here are a few suggestions to get started down the path of understanding the philosophy and practices of a farm.

  1. What pesticides and herbicides do you use on your farm?
  2. How do you encourage biodiversity on your farm?
  3. Have you adopted indigenous principles in your farming practices?
  4. What do you do to promote animal welfare?
  5. What are you doing to help capture carbon on your farm?
  6. Where were you made and assembled?

You’re liable to get a few blank stares if you ask all these questions at a conventionally managed farm, but the questions will hopefully help open a broader discussion of what healthy farming is. Question 6 is a bit of fun to help you learn your farmers background and history.

Keep reading to learn our answers and how we Graze Against The Machine.

Spring Planting and Hatching

Seeds and weeds aplenty!

Spring is a busy time on the farm, here's a quick summary about what we've been up to:
  • Prepare the soil for planting
  • Plant 250 tomato plants, 150 sweet and hot peppers, 50 basil plants
  • Drive 125 stakes in the ground to support all of the above
  • Plant ginger, artichokes, corn, cucumbers, squash, beans, dill, watermelons, cantaloupes, celery
  • Install new drip-line irrigation
  • Tying up the fast growing tomato plants
  • Mulch tomatoes
  • Weed, weed, weed
  • Run to the chicken house to check on the baby chicks
Here are some pictures documenting our progress

And finally, here is a video of 4 of the baby chicks that have hatched. The first of the chicks hatched on Cinco de Mayo. We have 5 hens sitting on eggs right now so we should have many more soon!
Thanks all y'all!

PictureFarmers Sue & Mike in a festive mood
We've been reflecting on the first 10 months living on the farm as we plan to scale for next year, we've been busy! Apart from fixing up the old farmhouse to stop the leaks and drafts, we got started on and finished a few farm projects as well:

-Plowed and planted a test garden
-Sold tomatoes & peppers to restaurants/grocery
-We were promoted on TV by top Chef, Bia Rich
-Put up livestock fencing around 40 acres
-Built a chicken house that houses 20 chickens
-Made our first batch of our farm raised hot sauce
-Established a beehive...lost all the bees this fall :-(
-Built cold frames to protect our winter garden from frost

We're looking forward to the challenges of 2015!

Happy Holidays y'all!
Sue & Mike
