An Introduction To Endangered Heritage Breed Farm Animals

A Pineywoods Cattle with big horns rests in the grass with the text An Introduction To Heritage Breeds overlayed
Heritage breed farm animals are an integral part of regenerative farming at Ozark Akerz, contributing to ecological and economic health each day. Heritage breeds are old-time/traditional farm animals that had a prominent role on farms of our ancestors. All the heritage breeds at Ozark Akerz have at least two jobs, from weeding to predator defense to controlling tick populations.

Heritage breeds have fallen out of favor with focus turning to industrialized farming, these historically important and resilient breeds are now endangered with extinction. This includes
  • Horses
  • Rabbits
  • Chickens
  • Donkeys
  • Cattle
  • Turkeys
  • Sheep
  • and other breeds…
In our latest Graze Against The Machine video we share why heritage are important to the regenerative farming practices at Ozark Akerz Regenerative Farm, explain why we chose the breeds we raise and share tips and resources so that you can get started raising your own heritage breeds in your backyard or on your farm and help save them from going extinct.

The Heritage breed farm animals at Ozark Akerz include:
  • Pineywoods Cattle help improve forest health by eating kudzu, greenbrier, poison ivy, brambles and other plants.
  • Cotton Patch Geese help weed the garden.
  • Dominique Chickens, they help control the tick population.
  • Bourbon Red Turkeys, they act as guards for the chickens, protecting them from hawks and other predatory birds
